Essential Holiday Packing Guide for Mums

Let’s face it, packing for a holiday—whether it's a quick weekend getaway or a long vacation—can be stressful. The constant worry of forgetting something, not packing enough, or not having enough suitcase space can take the fun out of the excitement. As a mum, you’re likely packing not just for yourself but for the entire family, which adds another layer of complexity.

When I first started taking my son on holidays and short breaks, I felt overwhelmed. To help the process and ensure nothing was left behind, I started making lists. These lists helped me remember everything I needed, avoid overpacking, prepare for all weather conditions, and fit everything into the suitcases we had. Today, I’m sharing my seven essential packing lists with you, hoping they’ll make your holiday packing as smooth as possible.

1. Clothing Essentials

The most obvious is clothing, it is usually the bulk of your packing. I always start with clothing as it is the biggest and takes up the most room in the suitcase. Organising clothing into categories can simplify the process and make it less overwhelming. Here are my go-to categories:

Daily Wear: Tops, bottoms, dresses, skirts, jeans, etc.

Outerwear: Jackets, coats, sweaters, cardigans.

Sleepwear: Pyjamas, nightgowns.

Underwear: Bras, panties, undershirts, boxers, etc.

Socks and Hosiery: Socks, trainer socks, stockings, tights.

Shoes: Casual shoes, dress shoes, sandals, trainers, boots.

Swimwear: Swimsuits, cover-ups, goggles, towels, etc.

Accessories: Belts, scarves, hats, gloves, sunglasses, jewellery.

Specialty Clothing: Formal wear, sports gear.

Packing Tip: Double up your outfits by choosing versatile tops and bottoms that can be mixed and matched to keep your packing light.

2. Toiletries

The next category I start packing is toiletries. Toiletries are essential, and while you can buy replacements if you forget something, it's often more cost-effective to bring your own. Categorise your toiletries for easier packing:

Personal Hygiene: Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash.

Hair Care: Shampoo, conditioner, hairbrush, comb, hair ties, styling products.

Skincare: Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, lip balm.

Cosmetics: Makeup, razor, shaving cream, etc.

Medication: Prescription meds, pain relievers, allergy meds, first aid kit.

Deodorant.

Feminine Products.

For Young Children and Babies: Include milk bottles, nappies/diapers, nappy bags, baby bath toiletries, toys, and their specific medication.

Don’t forget your hair dryer or straighteners if where you are staying they do not supply the room with one.

Everybody's needs when it comes to their own toiletries are different. Make a list of what each member of your family needs and share if you can to minimise your packing.

3. Important Documents

Documents are crucial, and forgetting them can ruin your trip. I don’t know about you but I always have anxiety with this which is why I check and double check. Always ensure you take identification even if it is a staycation.

Always bring hard copies of important documents as backups. You never know if you are going to be able to get a signal, battery runs out or you lose your phone.

Identification: Passport, ID card, driver’s licence.

Travel Documents: Tickets, boarding passes, hotel reservations, itinerary.

Financials: Credit cards, debit cards, cash, travellers' checks.

Health Documents: Insurance cards, vaccination records.

Emergency Contacts: List of names and important phone numbers

4. Electronics

In today’s world electronics is something we cannot go on holiday without. I actually have an entire bag just for all the electronics. Electronics are indispensable on trips. Designate a bag just for your gadgets and their accessories:

Mobile Phones: Chargers, portable batteries.

Camera: Batteries, charger, memory cards.

Laptop/Tablet: Chargers, protective cases.

Adaptors/Converters: Especially for international travels.

Game Consoles: Chargers, games, protective cases.

Headphones/Earbuds.

Even though my son is still young and does not have a phone I do have two bags for electronics, his and mine. This helps when he wants something in particular, I don’t have to empty the electronics to find one thing. Everything he wants or needs is in his own bag.

5. Entertainment

Whether you’re travelling with kids or not, having entertainment options can make a significant difference. If you do have kids there is even more entertainment to take including toys. Here is a list of entertainment items I take for my son and I.

Books/eBooks: Physical books, Kindle, children’s storybooks.

Magazines: A selection of your favourites and kids' magazines.

Games: Travel-sized games, kids' games, online games, playing cards, etc.

Movies/TV Shows: Download movies if you have subscriptions. or take a DVD player

Music: Make a playlist of your favourite music.

Toys: A selection of toys your little ones can play with to keep them entertained

Also check what things you can do for free. For example if you have amazon prime you can get 30 days free for audible, you can download magazines from amazon prime also.

6. Miscellaneous

When packing there is a selection of things that do not fit in a particular category but are still essential for us to take. Therefore these go into your miscellaneous category which I always try to keep as small as possible but here are a few things you may want to consider.

Travel Pillow.

Blankets.

Snacks and Drinks.

Reusable Water Bottles.

Travel Guides and Maps.

Notepad and Pen.

Sunglasses.

Umbrella/Raincoats.

Children’s Extra Items.

If you want to know what snacks and drinks to take with you on long and short journeys check out my other post here

7. Specialty Items

If you are heading out on a specific adventure or you are taking pets with you there are a few other items you may need to consider taking.

Pet Items: Food, leash, waste bags, pet bowls, toys, towels, pet shampoo.

Sports Equipment: Ski gear, snorkelling equipment, gym wear

Camping Gear: Tent, sleeping bag, cooking supplies.

Additional Tips

Here are a few extra tips for you when it comes to packing which some I have learned the hard way

Weather Considerations: Pack according to the climate of your destination.

Trip Duration: Adjust the quantity of items based on the length of your trip.

Luggage Space: Use space-saving techniques like rolling clothes and using packing cubes.

Checklists: Having a checklist for each category ensures you cover all your needs and makes packing more efficient.

Emergency Numbers- Take a written list of family/friends numbers if you need to reach anyone back home. It is also a good idea to have a list of vets in the area you are visiting if you are taking your pet just in case you may need it.

When it comes to the journey, ensure you have plenty of things to do, music lined up, snacks, entertainment for the kids, directions etc I have also found it useful to plan bathroom and rest breaks for you, the driver and your kids.

Also make sure you have checked and double checked everything, keep important documents with you and not in your luggage, the last thing you want is to start opening your luggage to find things.

Packing for a holiday doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these organised lists and tips, you can ensure a stress-free and well-prepared trip.

I hope you have found this blog post helpful but would love to know if you have any other essential packing tips?

Until next time
