Halloween is fast approaching, and as a single mum who doesn't really enjoy Halloween, I always do something because my son loves to be involved in Halloween activities (honestly, I think he just does it for the treats).
As a single parent, I like to keep things on a budget, especially since Halloween is not our favourite holiday. In this blog, I will give you different tips on how to celebrate Halloween on a budget, whether you are a Halloween fan or not.

Budget-Friendly Halloween Costumes
Pick a theme for your costume. You can do something easy, such as a ghost, just a white sheet with holes for eyes, or a zombie, which can be old clothes (maybe ones that are too short/small that you can rip). Finally, you could be a cat with black clothes, a homemade tail, and some ears.
Another costume option is to do a costume swap. Organise a costume swap at your child’s school. This way, you can get a costume and help others too.
Don’t forget your local thrift/charity stores. They often put out affordable Halloween costumes. If you cannot find any costumes, there may be plenty of accessories to use if you decide to make your own.
Make your own costumes using items and clothing you already have at home. For inspiration, I always find Pinterest great for simple DIY costume ideas.
Affordable Halloween Decorations
Next for Halloween on a budget is Halloween decorations. Even though you can get some fairly affordable decorations, it’s also about finding somewhere to store them. These budget-friendly ideas are great not only to do this year but to repeat every year with your kids.
DIY Decorations: Make your own decorations with things you already have. Use simple materials such as paper, cardboard, and markers to make spiders, bats, or spooky silhouettes.
Get out in the fresh air and collect autumn leaves, flower pots, stones, sticks, acorns, etc. Also, check out your local farmers’ markets or supermarkets for cheaper pumpkins to carve.
Reuse and repurpose old Halloween decorations or everyday items such as egg boxes, milk cartons, and even black bags. A quick look online will give you plenty of inspiration to create a spooky atmosphere with homemade and household items.
Finally, check out the local thrift/charity stores for Halloween decorations. If you are unable to find any, then check out budget-friendly stores as they now offer plenty of budget-friendly decorations and Halloween crafts.

Cheap Halloween Treats
Halloween is all about the treats, but these can become expensive, especially if you buy treats for your child as well as for the neighbourhood children who come for trick-or-treating. Here are ways to help keep treats on a budget and get your children involved:
Make homemade treats: Bake your own cookies, cupcakes, and popcorn balls. These are fun to do, a lot cheaper, and you can make a lot more than if you bought them. Make them all Halloween-themed and have fun.
If you do want to purchase treats because you cannot bake or just don’t have the time, look for coupons, offers, and sales. If you can bulk buy items, especially if you are hosting a Halloween party or participating in trick-or-treating, you will get a lot more for your money which in the long term will save money.
Finally, stick with simple treats. Special treats can have a special price tag, but children are also really happy with simple, inexpensive treats like homemade trail mix, popcorn, and pretzels.

Low-Cost Halloween Activities
Doing Halloween activities is the part my son loves the most. These are the things we do to keep costs low but still have lots of fun:
Every year, we do a Halloween scavenger hunt. I usually buy a couple of little Halloween prizes that cost under £1 to give my son at the end. You can find different Halloween items around the house to find or even get outside and do a scavenger hunt with other people’s decorations they have outside their houses.
Pumpkin carving is something we don’t do. I have purchased small pumpkins in the past, and they never get carved. However, if you and your children enjoy pumpkin carving, you can get small ones that are not overly expensive. If you want to avoid the mess of pumpkin carving, you can paint them instead.
Halloween games are also lots of fun. Some Halloween games to play are apple bobbing, a costume contest, or a spooky story session. There is plenty of inspiration online, or you can check my post on Halloween game ideasFamily-Friendly Halloween Games for a Spooktacular Celebration
My personal Halloween favourite is having a movie night. Depending on the age, find an appropriate movie, get some Halloween snacks and treats (or use the homemade ones you made earlier in the day), grab a big blanket, and cuddle with the people you love. Budget-Friendly Halloween Parties
To do Halloween on a budget, going to or hosting a Halloween party doesn't have to be expensive. It can still be done on a budget.
If you are hosting a party, ask each of your guests to bring a Halloween-themed dish. You can ask them to bring savoury or sweet items and ask each person to bring something different to offer a variety of items at the party. Again, check out this blog post Spooktacular Halloween Food Ideas: Starters, Mains, Desserts, and Snacks for some Halloween-themed food ideas.
Make simple decorations, dim lighting, and use candles (battery candles if you have little ones around). A few well-placed decorations will set a Halloween mood.
Create a Halloween spooky playlist using free services. If you have Amazon Prime, you can use Amazon Music. You can even put YouTube on, get the premium version to avoid ads, and cancel the free trial afterward to have Halloween music in the background or for children to dance to.
Doing Halloween on a budget can be done, but most importantly, it’s about doing something with the people you love, spending time with them, and having some spooky fun.
I hope you have enjoyed this blog post and found it helpful in some way. If you have, let me know. Also, be sure to check out those other blog posts for more Halloween ideas.
Until next time,
